I guess now was as good as a time as any to sort through 9 years of recordings and uncover some gems that did not make it onto a compilation for whatever reason or another. I feel that the freshness and spontaneity of these recordings is like the past that never leaves us. Where else can you hear sneezing or coughing in a recording? These are the simple virtues that find their way in the recordings as if they belonged. I guess they do. And sometimes I find the things that are happening in the background just as interesting as the centerpiece. The way in which those background sounds effect and occasionally advance the overall texture of the piece is why I do this. The spontaneity of recording in an uncontrolled environment keeps the music fresh and alive.
At times it feels as if we are searching for the good ol' days when they are actually these days passing us by, but well, cynicisms breath is stinking the wind these days. And humanity has a way to know that the only thing we learn from history is that we never learn anything from history. Nonetheless, despite the worlds ’ struggles there is always music to help remind us to lighten up a bit. And so here are 33 songs and poems that were recorded from 2000 to 2008 at a variety of the North American annual gatherings, as well as, from the Mexico and Panama gatherings in 2005. Dug up and carried forth. Enjoy!
This collection entited "The Leftovers 2000-2008" contains 2 CDs. The First CD has 18 tracks on it and the second CD has 15 tracks.

1- Waveland,Mississippi – NPR Broadcast CO2006
This was recorded on July 4th at Granola Funk Theatre. Henry the Fiddler borrowed some ones portable amp to play the NPR broadcast about an “unusual” bunch of folks that served free food for the people of Waveland, Mississippi that were displaced from their homes after Hurricane Katrina. I love the oddness of the recording that was played through the amp and the story itself is quite inspiring for us all. Serving free food is certainly something that helps to bridge the gaps of separation and class.

3- Rollin' In My Sweet Babys' Arms - PoDank UT2003
I recorded several songs of PO Dank at a trailside fire including this traditional song. Two are featured on the UT 2003 compilation. The night was cold, the snow had just melted, but the fire was warm and the bluegrass was just what we needed to weather the storm.
4- Lost In Space - Raccoon ID2001
I recorded several songs of Raccoon by a fire near main circle (you can hear the main circle boogie pit drumming away in the background). He was a good songwriter and always a joy to hear singing songs. Bless his soul.
5- Tabla-n-Flute - Unknown ID2001
Recorded in the kitchen at Diva Diner. It sounds as if someone is trying to boil water or something in the background and the music seems to mystify the wonder of what the hell is going on even more.

10- Walking - The Walker MO2000
The is a little snippet of me walking in the woods along side Bloody Dick Creek (yes that is its name) back to camp during seed camp. Your guess is as good as mine as to where the name comes from. I think it may refer to the famous African American cowboy Nat Love or better known as Deadwood Dick.
11- I Drink Lots Of Whiskey - PoDank UT2003
Another tune from PO Dank by a trailside fire a few days after the blizzard made its way through seed camp at the Utah gathering.
12- Montana - Zero Boy MO2000
Recorded at Granola Funk Theatre on July 4th. Here is Zero Boy spinning his humorous words concerning all things Montana rainbow.
13- 6up Blues - Mike CO2006
Recorded in a meadow near Popcorner on a sunny afternoon. A bizarre piece, kinda blues kinda not. This song makes me feel like I am alone in the desert with nothing but the thoughts in my head and the stillness in the air.
14- Dark Dark - Little Space WY2008
A freestyle poem presented at the July 3rd open mic at Popcorner. Little Space layed it all out improvasationally according to the flow of those at the campfire.

1- Banjo Solo - Mike CO2006
Recorded in a meadow near Popcorner on a sunny afternoon. When one thinks of the banjo gentle and soft usually don’t come to mind. However, this tune flows like a calm stream in some quiet woods..
2- Natures Catherdral - Raccoon ID2001
Recorded at a campfire near main circle. This is one of my favorite songs by Raccoon.

4- Jah Soljah - Rocker T MI2002

Recorded at the Diva Diner bliss pit. This was a great night as the zuzus zoomed and Rocker T jammed around the campfire laying down one great tune after the next. Several of those songs from that evening can be heard on the MI 2002 compilation
5- Didj-n-drums - Various WV2005
Recorded at the July 2nd dance party at Granola Funk Theatre. Shake your bones…
6- Old Sparky - PoDank UT2003
Recorded at a trailside fire. One of my favorite songs they played that evening. The words of this song struck a chord as everyone was slowly recovering from what could be one of the roughest moments the elements have offered a gathering. I look back on the blizzard with a smile. Yes it sucked being cold and wet and having to melt snow to make coffee (the water lines were frozen), but an experience like that does not come along everyday.
7- Water - Terra Taura CA2004
Recorded at the Popcorner/Aloha campfire on July 6th. I stayed up late that night, as I knew we were cleaning up our kitchen the following day and my gathering “all-nighters” were winding down. Several other songs I recorded that evening are featured on the CA 2004 compilation.
8- I Will Never Walk Without You - Deja, Tina, Sasha, Nakima, Lucy & Nastacia CA2004
Recorded on July 3rd at Jerusalem Camp. A sweet and timeless melody.
9- Birds – Meadow in Mexico MEX2005
| Here is a snippet of me recording the morning birds at the Mexico gathering. The gathering was in March and we were in the time of movement for many migratory birds. Each morning was a carnival of birds and one of my best memories from that gathering was waking up to them as I lay dreaming in my tent. |
10- Mahadeva Shambo – Rocker T UT2003
Recorded on July 2nd at Kickapoo/Deva Diner or Kick-a-Deva or Deva Poo or what have you. Or better yet the kitchen that actually wished it was an Ark floating on the sea. Nonetheless, Rocker T came by that evening and jammed several songs around the fire. This song fades out early because my batteries died. Short but sweet.
11- Didj-n-flute – Various WV2005
Recorded at the July 4th Variety Show at Granola Funk Theatre. I believe this spontaneous moment of music accompanied a spontaneous moment of Butoh.
12- Blue Moon Of Kentucky – PoDank UT2003
Recorded at a trailside fire. An old Bluegrass tune that probably dates back to the 1940’s and here they play a good campfire version.
13- This Is Why I Sing – Zahira & Jaris WY2008
Recorded at Granola Funk Theatre on July 4th. Great tune and lucky to have it considering it was recorded by accident. I left to go get some popcorn for a bit and didn’t realize that I had not stopped the recorder
14- Starling – Possibility CO2006
A poem performed at the July 5th open mic at Popcorner. It was an evening that featured many songs and poems. I like the crackle from the fire that accompanies the words.

| 16- She’s My Drug Addict – Colonel Crust MT2000 |
2.2M |
4.9M |
| Recorded at the July 1st singer songwriter night at Granola Funk Theatre. I’m a sucker for quirky folk songs and this one in particular is some sort of homage to trailer trash. |
| 17- Its Life Kid – Maya CO 2006 |
3.1M |
6.8M |
| Recorded at the July 5th open mic at Popcorner. Loud music can keep us moving but sometimes it is good to strip down and not to forget the art of poems and story telling. |
| 18- Bear Ass Beach - Bear MO2000 |
1.3M |
2.9M |
Recorded at Zipolite kitchen some starry night. According to Bear the song is about a creek in Ohio called Bear Creek. People had a little spot on the creek where skinny-dipping was the norm and soon a nickname was born.
